Letters from Love
Letters from Love
For the past two months, I’ve been doing a daily practice called “Letters from Love”, which I heard about via Elizabeth Gilbert’s Substack called Letters from Love. The practice involves: 1) asking “Love, what would you have me know today?”; 2) beginning with a term of endearment, or how Love refers to you; and 3) journaling free form for six min on whatever comes to mind.
Although EG didn’t specifically say this, I translate “Love” to be God. Others might use different words or concepts.
Admittedly, I was skeptical at first. While I’m all in for trying new things on my spiritual journey, this one was outside my comfort zone. But I committed to doing it, and wow, it’s been amazing and impactful. Literally, the words have flowed without any pre meditation or preparation whatsoever. I find the six minutes flies by and I’m writing non-stop. Each day’s been a different message, directly from God, or via a conduit, like my Dad, or other ancestors or heroes in my life.
The most important theme that has emerged is that I am “beloved”; not for what I’ve done or earned, but just for being me. A close second is that I have something meaningful to share with the world. While both of these themes are common to most religions, they have a much stronger meaning when spoken directly and specifically to you. The power of personal and heartfelt words, using yourself as the communication conduit, is hard to comprehend until you try it.
In today’s world, letter writing has become something of a lost art. Elizabeth Gilbert gave me a gift that has touched my soul, and helped me become more serene, forgiving and thankful toward myself. I hope it eventually translates into how I share love with others.
Try it yourself! Happy writing.
